Why do cats have all those whiskers all over their face? I'm a bad person, but I couldn't handle the curiosity and cut all of them off the right side of my cat's face. But it didn't seem to affect him at all. And they are growing back quit nicely. But really, what are they for?
A cat has about twenty-four movable whiskers, twelve on each side of its nose (some cat's may have more). Whiskers are more than twice as thick as ordinary hairs, and their roots are set three times deeper than hairs in a cat's tissue. Richly supplied with nerve endings, whiskers give cats extraordinarily detailed information about air movements, air pressure and anything they touch.
The scientific word for whiskers is vibrissae, a name that suggests their exquisite sensitivity to vibrations in air currents. As air swirls and eddies around objects, whiskers vibrate too. Cats use messages in these vibrations to sense the presence, size, and shape of obstacles without seeing or touching them. Whiskers are also good hunting tools. A cat whose whiskers have been damaged may bite the wrong part of awhat are whiskers for mouse it's attacking, indicating that signals from these delicate structures provide cats with vital information about the shape and activity of its prey - interestingly, whiskers also help cats smell odours.
hey..thanks! thats good. i also think it effects different cats in different ways. :)
Beside being a bad person you are an idiot. Cats use their whiskers to measure a space to see if the space is big enough for them to get through.. I just hope no one gets curious to see if you have a brain.
I think it is so that they can determine whether they will get stuck in a hole/doorway/crawlway, etc., if they were to enter. The whiskers touch the sides of the "squeeze" and through those they can sense the size of the space and whether their body can maneuver safely in that size opening. It's a safety thing.
it helps them feel around in the dark
For balance and eyesight. They cant see very well.
Mizz Know It sure doesn't know it. Cats have really good eyesight and they have really good balance because if they fall off a what are whiskers fortree they land on their feet. Whiskers are too sense where their going in the dark because cats are nocturnal.
They are for balance and they also help them feel out things since their sight isnt to great
First of all, why would you cut your cat's whiskers off not knowing what can happen to him or her.
Second, cats whiskers are for feeling and balance. They use them at night to feel around and see if they can fit in small places (ever notice that your cats whiskers are about as long as the width of your cat?), so they don't get stuck.
cats whiskers are for seeing at night, they are not eyes, but show the cat where there might be a dead end, whiskers are for feeling
to protect them from fukkin desieses
They are used for sensing things and they are very important.
Cats use their whiskers for when there awake in the night , they use thir whiskers to sense if the opening is big enough for them to go through . like if a crack in the wall is big enough for them to get through. and they also use their whiskers for balance
